A new policy implemented by the Iowa City Community School District will move students involved in physical fights to online learning for up to 60 days.
The Gazette reports that a student who participates in one physical fight, assault or act of physical aggression will sign a behavior contract. Superintendent Matt Degner, in an email to families October 31st, said the terms of the contract will address issues that led to the student’s unsafe and inappropriate behavior and empower the student to avoid future disciplinary measures.
Students who commit a second offense will go to online learning for 30 days, while a third offense puts the student in online learning for 60 days.
Superintendent Degner says that fighting gets in the way of a student’s academic success. The policy allows students to continue their education while addressing their behavior.
The online program was launched in the fall of 2021 and features live virtual instruction. 180 students are currently enrolled in the program exclusively.
