The dean of the University of Iowa College of Engineering is leaving for a new job opportunity.

The UI announced on Tuesday that Harriet Nembhard has been named president of Harvey Mudd College, a liberal arts school located in Claremont, California that specializes in science, engineering, and mathematics.

Nembhard, who joined the UI in June of 2020, will begin her new position on July 1st. The UI will soon conduct a national search for Nembhard’s replacement.

As dean of the UI College of Engineering, Nembhard manages a budget of $100 million and oversees the academic programs, departments and institutes that support about 1,800 undergraduates and more than 250 graduate students. School officials say during her tenure she has led initiatives in strategic planning and implementation, improving the college’s research profile and increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
