An Iowa City man was arrested on drug charges while being served a warrant stemming from an alleged domestic assault earlier in the month.

The original incident in question reportedly occurred the evening of November 13th. 40-year-old Kevin Burns of East Market Street was in a verbal altercation with the woman he’s been dating for approximately two years when he reportedly punched her with a closed fist. The blow caused the woman’s lower lip to swell and bleed.

A witness said she heard what sounded like a physical altercation, followed by Burns’ girlfriend saying, “you punched me in the face.” Burns had left the South Van Buren Street residence where the altercation occurred before police arrived.

A warrant for his arrest was obtained, and police went to his residence Tuesday evening. Officers allegedly discovered a package of marijuana in plain view on top of his TV. Burns reportedly admitted that the substance was marijuana, was his, and that he uses it for medicinal purposes.

A check of Burns’ arrest records showed at least four controlled substance convictions from Cook County Illinois.

Burns was arrested on the Domestic Abuse Assault warrant, a second offense. He was also charged with a 3rd or subsequent Controlled Substance violation. If convicted on both counts, Burns could be sentenced to up to three years in jail.
