The Iowa City city council has voted to fill the council seat currently occupied by Janice Weiner.

Weiner officially announced earlier this week that she was stepping down…a move that became necessary when she won her State Senate District 45 race last week.

Weiner has one year left on her city council term. At Tuesday night’s meeting, the council voted unanimously to appoint a replacement, with councilor John Thomas absent. The alternative option was setting a special election, which the council unanimously rejected. The short time remaining on Weiner’s term and the cost of holding a special election were both factors cited at Tuesday night’s meeting. A special election could still be forced by public petition.

Any Iowa City resident is eligible to apply for the open seat starting next month. The council is expected to discuss Weiner’s replacement at its January 10th meeting.

Weiner’s final day on the council is December 31st.
