Saying he wants to ensure Iowans of the integrity of the election, Secretary of State Paul Pate says each county will have two hand-counted audits following today’s election.
The Daily Iowan reported that the audits are nothing new, but previously there was only one per county. Pate says previous audits consistently match the ballot tabulators perfectly.
A random precinct from each county will hand-audit the ballot tabulator results for the gubernatorial race, while the other audit will be randomly selected.
Recent laws enacted in the Republican-controlled state have reduced the early voting period, closed the polls an hour earlier, and required that absentee ballots be at the county auditor’s office by the end of Election Day to be counted.
Pate himself is facing an election race today.
