An Iowa man has been arrested after a welfare check discovered he was driving a stolen vehicle.

North Liberty Police received a welfare check call on 40-year-old Brandon Proctor of Aurora Iowa Sunday morning. They found him in the parking lot at Casey’s on Kansas Avenue, and ran the license plate on the Chevy truck he was operating. Officers discovered that the plate had been reported stolen, and didn’t match the vehicle. Once the vehicle was run, it was discovered that it too had been reported stolen.

A passenger in the truck reportedly stated that Proctor had picked them up in the truck 5-6 days prior to the stop.

An officer attempted to remove Proctor from the vehicle, but he put it in reverse and attempted to drive off. The officer was dragged by the vehicle and eventually got Proctor to stop.

A search of Proctor post-arrest allegedly turned up a pill bottle containing a baggie with meth inside.

The man faces several charges, including 1st degree Theft, 3rd or subsequent drug possession, two counts of 3rd degree Theft, two counts of Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, and Driving while Barred as an Habitual Offender. If convicted on all counts, Proctor faces a prison sentence of up to 23 years.

He is additionally being held on retainer for charges in Clinton, Poweshiek, and Buchanan counties.
