Iowa City Police say a suspect in a series of thefts claimed to be both a lead singer of a famous rock band and an NFL quarterback when caught by officers.
Police were called to a shoplifting report at the Mormon Trek Boulevard Kum & Go just before 3am Wednesday. The suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Donnie Reed of Westwinds Drive, allegedly stole a bottle of Tito’s Vodka worth $21.49.
Police caught up with Reed near the corner of Mormon Trek Boulevard and Bartelt Road. They allege that Reed claimed not to have a driver’s license. He then reportedly claimed his name was “Chris Robinson”, who is the lead singer of the band Black Crowes, and gave a fake date of birth. Investigators say he then claimed to be “Geno Smith”, who is the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, and gave a fake social security number.
Reed was eventually properly identified, and was wanted for previous thefts of lottery tickets from that same Kum & Go location twice in the last week. He’s also accused of stealing a $24.95 bottle of Jim Beam Red Stag from that location at 1:15am on October 14th, as well as using a stolen credit card at the Kum & Go and nearby Hartig Drug and Fareway in January of 2020.
Reed faces two charges each of 5th Degree Theft and Theft of Lottery Tickets, as well as one charge each of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card and Providing False Identity Information. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 12 years in prison.
