The University of Iowa’s Undergraduate Student Government wants to increase student fees to advance renovations at the Iowa Memorial Union.

The Daily Iowan reported that the resolution passed Tuesday would add $40 to the fees, making them $240 over an academic year. Dean of Students Eric Rossow says that renovation is a less expensive alternative to replacing the building altogether. Estimated cost for phase one of the renovation exceeds $63 million, and includes renovating the Iowa House Hotel on the first floor.

Rossow added that a moratorium on renovations after the 2008 flood has been lifted by FEMA, prompting the plans to modify the building. The IMU renovations also include updates to food services areas, and moving University Counseling Service into the building.

The DI says that a similar resolution will be discussed at the Graduate and Professional Student Government meeting next week. If approved, a joint USG-GPSG written letter will be sent to the regents. The renovations and cost still need approval from the University and the Board of Regents for the project to move forward.
