A Cedar Rapids man has been jailed after allegedly targeting a black man because of his race and shooting at him.

The Gazette reports that 31-year-old Joshua Barnhart followed the man from a Northeast Cedar Rapids Casey’s convenience store Friday to the man’s place of employment in Hiawatha.

As the man exited his vehicle to enter Midland Concrete, Barnhart allegedly got out of his vehicle, pulled out a Ruger handgun, and fired two shots at the man before fleeing. He eluded officers until they deployed stop sticks on his vehicle.

The criminal complaint alleges that Barnhart, who is white, targeted the victim because of his race.

Barnhart is in the Linn County Jail facing charges of Attempted Murder, Assault with Intent to inflict Serious Injury, Going Armed with Intent, Assault while displaying a Dangerous Weapon, and Eluding. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 38 years in prison.
