The new taxing district on Iowa City’s south side has named its first executive director, and she’s a known advocate for the area.
The Gazette reports that South District resident Angie Jordan will start in the position next month.
Jordan is president and co-founder of the South District Neighborhood Association. She was one of the people who pushed for creating the self-supported municipal improvement district, also known as an SSMID.
The district started collecting levies July 1. The money, estimated to be over $100,000 annually, will be used to give a face-lift to the Pepperwood Plaza area between Broadway and Keokuk Streets. The levy plan runs for five years with an option for renewal.
The newspaper said that the nationwide search for an executive director narrowed the field down to six candidates before unanimously deciding that Jordan was the person for the job.
Among the responsibilities Jordan is tasked with are marketing and branding of the SSMID. The district revitalization is off to a good start; a new Popeye’s restaurant and Quick Shine Car Wash plan to open soon in the area.
