An Iowa City transient who was reportedly at his ex-girlfriend’s residence refused to leave and called her from the back of a squad car while he was being transported to jail on assault charges.
Police say the incident occurred at the woman’s Iowa City apartment at approximately 5:45pm Sunday. 36-year-old Chase Stoudt was asked to leave multiple times, and Stoudt reportedly left through the back door that leads to a fire escape.
Stoudt then tried to enter the apartment, and tried to push the woman out of the doorway so that he could get in, but she shut the door so he couldn’t get in. Stoudt then allegedly started punching the door and hitting his head on the glass, which led to the glass being broken out.
Stoudt reportedly told police that he had drank three Coors tall-boy beers prior to his arrival. He had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, stumbled when he walked, and wasn’t making sense when talking to officers. The woman told police that the two had been in a two-month intimate relationship but were no longer together. She also was visibly scared and told police she was in fear of Stoudt.
Once seen by medical personnel, Stoudt was transported to the Johnson County Jail. In transit, he asked the officers for permission to call his boss to let him know he wasn’t going to make it into work. Instead, he called the woman’s phone. She reportedly was hysterical when she called 911 about Stoudt calling her. Police confiscated his phone.
Stoudt faces a list of charges, the most serious being 1st degree Burglary. He’s also charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, 2nd degree Harassment, Public Intoxication, and 4th degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all counts, Stoudt could be sentenced to over 27 years in prison. A no-contact order was requested.
