A convicted felon was charged after attempting to purchase a weapon this summer.
27-year-old Jason Hammons of Boston Way in Coralville met with a sales associate at Scheels in the Coral Ridge Mall the evening of July 11th. Hammons was handed a Taurus G3 9mm pistol and is observed handling the firearm.
Hammons then filled out a firearm transaction form in hopes of purchasing the weapon, and allegedly provided false information on the form. Specifically, he did not disclose that he was a convicted felon on theft charges in 2018.
Hammons was interviewed by police and allegedly admitted that he didn’t read the form and also admitted that he knew he was on probation.
A warrant for his arrest was issued on August 24th, and he was served on September 1st. Hammons posted bond and his arraignment has yet to be scheduled. He faces charges of Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, and Providing False Information in Acquiring a weapon. If convicted on both counts, Hammons could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
