The office of Gov. Kim Reynolds and city of Iowa City officials have dispelled rumors that immigrants are being bused from Texas to Iowa City.

On Thursday social media was abuzz with stories of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordering immigrants into buses and having them shipped to what he considers “sanctuary cities”…such as Iowa City…in response to what he says are lax immigration policies from the Joe Biden administration. While such buses have been sent to such major cities Chicago, Washington, DC and New York City, Iowa City is not on the list. Iowa City is not technically a “sanctuary city”, although city officials have told local law officers to prioritize local law enforcement over enforcing immigration policy. But city code also requires Iowa City Police to comply with all federal laws.

The busing rumor began after CNN acquired a list of what Abbott considered “sanctuary cities”. Iowa City was on that list, but both the Iowa governor’s office and city of Iowa City officials say they have no evidence that such buses have been sent to Iowa City.
