A former Clear Creek Amana coach has been arrested and charged with having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student over 15 years ago.
According to the criminal complaints, the victim made a report to law enforcement this past March. She stated that when she was in high school in 2006 and 2007, her softball coach and teacher began grooming her, and a sexual relationship occurred on two separate occasions. She estimated the first incident occurred while she was a freshman.
According to her account, now 58-year-old James Anthony White of Cook Circle in North Liberty called her and asked her to meet him on a gravel road in rural Johnson County. He allegedly gave her directions to his location and asked her to stay on her phone while she was en route. The victim said that she got into his vehicle, where they had intercourse in the back seat.
When the girl was fifteen in July 2007, White reportedly invited her to his residence while his wife was out of town coaching in the state softball tournament. She alleges that the two had intercourse that evening.
As the victim was a student and athlete of White at the time, she was unable to provide consent to the then 43-year-old man.
Upon completion of the investigation, a warrant for White’s arrest was issued on July 22nd. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail Sunday night and faces two counts of 3rd degree Sexual Abuse and two counts of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee. White faces a prison sentence of up to 30 years if convicted on all charges.
The Clear Creek Amana Community School District issued a statement Monday morning, stating they are aware of the arrest and that White resigned from CCA in June of this year. The statement added that White’s alleged actions are intolerable, and that any allegations of improper behavior are taken seriously, thoroughly investigated, and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
The district is cooperating with investigators and is not offering any further comment.
