A Cedar Rapids man was arrested over the weekend on warrants stemming from a traffic stop in Iowa City.

The incident in question occurred at approximately 4:30 pm on July 1st. An Iowa City police officer was on routine patrol through the Dodge Street HyVee when he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from a vehicle owned by 33-year-old Xavier Bailey of Bever Avenue SE as he and the occupants got out of it.

The odor was isolated to Bailey’s vehicle, and a traffic stop was initiated when Bailey returned to the car. The odor of marijuana coming from him was reportedly excessive and a probable cause search was executed.

Bags full of drug paraphernalia, suspected marijuana seeds, loose marijuana, a pistol and ammunition was allegedly discovered during the search. The pistol, some of the drugs, and paraphernalia were located in a bag with indications of Bailey’s ID inside.

A warrant for Bailey’s arrest was issued on July 5th, and he was taken to the Johnson County Jail Sunday afternoon. He faces charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, 3rd or subsequent offense, Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, and Keeping Vehicle for Controlled Substances. If Bailey is convicted on all counts, he faces a prison term of up to twelve years.
