A former independent social worker with Polk Alternative Education Center in Cedar Rapids who was convicted in 2021 for pursuing a sexual relationship with a 14 year old boy has been sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison.

46-year-old Miranda Breeden of Monticello pleaded guilty last July to one count of enticement of a minor. She admitted that she used a cellphone to entice a 14-year-old boy to engage in sex acts between November 2019 and January 2020.

Officials at the Cedar Rapids Community School District placed Breeden on leave once they found out about the investigation and terminated her on July 31st 2020. She had been employed with the district since August 2019.

The boy’s mother became concerned about the relationship between Breeden and her son and notified a school resource officer, then found inappropriate text messages between the two. The boy’s brother also told police that the boy was having sex with Breeden.

The two reportedly engaged in sexual activity in Breeden’s counselor’s office, hotels, and at Breeden’s parents’ house in Monticello.

A separate charge of making false statements in the purchase of a firearm for the boy was dismissed at sentencing Friday. The Gazette reports US District Judge CJ Williams called her behavior “horribly egregious,” and said that providing a deadly weapon was both reckless and dangerous.

Breeden was sentenced to 135 months in prison with five years of supervised release.
