The Iowa City Police Department conducted tobacco sales law compliance checks Tuesday through Thursday at the 55 Iowa City businesses licensed to sell tobacco, alternative nicotine, or vapor products. According to the ICPD, underage persons working with plainclothes officers entered the businesses and attempted to illegally purchase those products. Forty-five businesses refused to sell tobacco or other nicotine or vapor products to the underage buyers.
Ten businesses checked by police sold to the underage buyers. The businesses that failed the compliance checks were:
L & M Mighty Shop – 504 E. Burlington Street
Kum & Go – 2303 Muscatine Avenue
Casey’s General Store – 370 Scott Court
Almost Paradise – 355 S. Linn Street
Casey’s General Store – 204 N. Dubuque Street
Kum & Go – 325 E. Burlington Street
The Konnexion – 106 S. Linn Street
Up in Smoke – 208 N. Linn Street
Fast Break – 2580 Naples Avenue
RJz Express – 2 Escort Lane
The employees who sold tobacco products to the underage buyers were each charged with, “Employee Selling Tobacco to Persons Under Age 21,” a simple misdemeanor punishable with a $135 fine for the first offense. Additionally, the violations may result in civil penalties against the tobacco licenses.
