The Iowa Board of Regents are considering a 4.25 % tuition increase for resident undergraduates at its three state-run universities this fall.

The Gazette reports that a final vote on the proposal is expected next month, and will bump tuition at the University of Iowa up by $355 to a total of $8711. Out of state undergrads would get a smaller percentage increase, but the same $355, to bring their tuition to $30,674.

The proposal was made public Wednesday, and is tied to the Regent five-year undergraduate resident tuition rate guidelines they established in 2018. It ties tuition increases to state funding. The Regents say if they went by those guidelines to the letter, the rate increase could have been as high as 5.6 percent.

The state legislature again failed to fully fund the Regent’s request for a $22.1 million dollar funding increase this year, approving just $6.2 million.

The Gazette says if all rate and fee increases are approved by the board, it will cost resident undergrads $26,686 to attend the University of Iowa, $23,470 at Iowa State, and $21,988 at the University of Northern Iowa.

All three universities have the second-lowest resident undergraduate tuition in their respective peer groups, with the UI and ISU having the least expensive non-resident undergraduate rates.
