A domestic incident in Iowa City early Sunday morning led to the arrest of a Johnston man.

Arrest reports indicate the incident involved 30-year-old Joshua Thompson and the woman he lives with on East Court Street around 3:30 am. Thompson and the woman were in an argument when he allegedly knocked her to the ground, straddled her and put both hands around her throat. The victim reported that she was unable to breathe and felt like she was going to lose consciousness.

Thompson reportedly told the woman he was going to kill her, then himself.

She saw a phone on the ground nearby and twice tried to call 911 for help. Thompson allegedly saw what the woman was trying to do, took the phone, and ended the call. Dispatchers called back, which allowed the woman to get away from Thompson. He reportedly chased her as she ran away.

The woman suffered bruising, redness and scratches to her neck as a result of the altercation.

Thompson was arrested and charged with 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault, Domestic Abuse Assault restricting Airflow, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted, he faces over six years in prison.
