The latest Iowa Department of Public Health figures show new COVID-19 cases continue to increase weekly, but hospitalizations dropped.
The Gazette reports that the majority of the state’s 99 counties are still in “high” or “substantial” community transmission, with Johnson and Linn Counties with the highest transmission levels. Johnson County continues to have the highest 7-day positivity rate in the state, now seven weeks in a row.
The good news is that cases here are falling; 406 cases in the past week compared to 424 the week before. Linn County also showed a slight decrease of three cases compared to the week before.
Hospitalizations are starting to drop after jumping nearly thirty percent the week before.
Vaccinated Iowans continue to increase, albeit slowly; only Johnson County has hit the 70 percent threshold, with 73.1 percent of the total population vaccinated against the virus. 77.6 percent of county residents 5 and over are vaccinated; the only other county over 70 percent in residents 5 and over is Linn County, at 71.6%.
9,615 Iowans have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March 2020.
