The Iowa City City Council has voted to earmark a quarter million dollars in American Rescue Plan Act funds to the city’s tourism industry.

The Gazette reports that the council voted unanimously to reimburse Think Iowa City for revenue lost during the coronavirus pandemic, estimated to be over $125,000. The other half of the award will be used for tourism and visitor recovery grants, which will be detailed later in the year. Think Iowa City hopes to open the application window for the grants sometime in August.

The city will get a total of $18.3 million in Rescue Plan Act money and have already approved spending around $3.5 million. Funds have been earmarked for Johnson County’s Direct Assistance Program, Community Crisis Services mobile outreach operation, and relocation expenses for residents of the Forest View mobile home park.
