Johnson County Jail inmate faces felony charge after alleged cellblock assault

A Johnson County Jail inmate faces a felony charge after allegedly breaking another inmate’s nose during an assault.

Arrest records indicate 34-year-old Samuel Lockett of Aster Avenue punched another inmate 14 times just before 4:45 Friday afternoon. Arriving guards found the victim bleeding from the face. He reported that Lockett had attacked him…an accusation backed up by video surveillance. The victim was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with a broken nose. He also suffered numerous bruises.

Lockett is charged with Assault Causing Serious Injury, a Class D felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.

Lockett is awaiting an August 23rd trial on Eluding charges after allegedly leading Coralville police on a chase down Hayden Fry Way last December.

In 2014, Lockett reached a plea deal with prosecutors after Iowa City police say he robbed a cab driver on New Year’s Eve 2013 on the 900 block of Hudson Avenue. A 2nd Degree Robbery charge was pleaded down to Assault While Participating in a Felony, and Lockett was sentenced to five years in prison.
