An Iowa City man wanted on a domestic assault warrant was taken into custody Wednesday, but reportedly not without adding to his charges by fighting with an officer.
Police observed 28-year-old Daniel Cancino as he pulled into the Kirkwood Liquor and Tobacco parking lot at around 4:10 pm. Knowing that he had felony parole and probation violation warrants, the officer grabbed hold of Cancino and ordered him to put his hands behind his back. Instead, Cancino allegedly began fighting with the officer.
He reportedly removed the officer’s radio from his vest and turned it off so that he could not call for backup. Once the officer pulled out his taser to get control of the situation, Cancino allegedly grabbed a hold of it. The officer pushed Cancino away from him and employed the taser when he tried to run away, subduing him.
A four-year-old child was in the backseat of Cancino’s vehicle with the window down while the altercation was taking place.
Cancino was wanted on a domestic abuse warrant.
After Wednesday’s incident, Cancino now faces additional charges of Disarming a Police Officer, Child Endangerment, Removing a Radio from an Officer, Interference with Official Acts, and driving while license suspended. If convicted on all counts against him, Cancino could face a prison sentence of up to over 11 years.
