University of Iowa Police report that a person was injured in a shots-fired incident near the VA Hospital.
The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety issued a Hawk Alert just before 5 pm Sunday indicating that a person had been shot at the Medical Education Building, located on the west side of campus on Newton Road. Police later updated the alert and said that the incident took place east of the Highway 6 entrance to the Veterans Administration Hospital.
In the update, authorities clarified that the incident did not occur at the Medical Education Building or on UI property.
Officials encouraged residents to avoid the area; parts of Newton Road and Highway 6 were closed during the investigation.
Iowa City Police updated the public a little after 6:30 pm in a news release, stating that the incident took place in the 600 block of Highway 6 West around 4:45 pm. One person was taken to a hospital with a non -life-threatening gunshot wound. It’s not believed that there is an active threat to the public.
Police are asking for the public’s help with their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Iowa City Police at 319-356-5275. In addition, anyone in that area with security cameras is asked to review their recordings and contact the police with any potential footage or information about this incident.
