Sentencing has been postponed for a local transient convicted of murder.
23-year-old Sammy Hamed was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday for the murder of 19-year-old Quincy Russom. Russom was shot and killed in February of 2021 inside a Governor Street apartment.
Hamed was found shortly after the shooting with several of Russom’s possessions, including his phone. Forensic testing matched a gun found on Hamed’s person to shells found inside the apartment.
Hamed was initially charged with 1st Degree Murder, a Class A Felony punishable by life in prison. Last March, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of 2nd Degree Murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 50 years behind bars.
Hamed has multiple previous theft and drug convictions.
Russom’s family indicated on social media that defense attorney Matthew Boles used a technicality to convince judge Andrew Chappell to postpone the sentencing to June 17th. Family members travelled from Milwaukee for Friday’s scheduled hearing, and say they were given short notice that the sentencing would be postponed.
