The Muscatine City Council has voted to lift a ban on pit-bull ownership in the city for the first time since 2003.

WQAD TV reports that the council voted 5-2 Thursday night to allow residents to keep pit bulls, subject to the same regulations all other pet owners face.

The city had its decades-long ban temporarily lifted on January 13th this year, after community and council members said they were exploring ways to change the law to focus on more aggressive dogs in general. That ruling also passed in a 5-2 vote.

The council then met in February to discuss possible changes to pet ownership code, distinguishing between “dangerous” and “vicious” dogs.

The new code says that dogs must be kept on a leash in a limited area, and owners must display warning signs. It also outlines an owner’s responsibility to adequately care for their pets, including up to date vaccinations.
