A Thursday afternoon accident near the I380-US 30 interchange resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
According to a press release from the Cedar Rapids Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred just before 4pm. Police and firefighters were dispatched to the southbound area of I-380 and Highway 30 for reports of a two-vehicle accident at 3:56 pm. Arriving units discovered a Buick SUV driven by 39-year-old Carlos Garcia of Cedar Rapids had collided with a motorcycle.
Preliminary investigation indicates Garcia attempted to exit I-380 south with the intent of making the turn to head toward Highway 30 east. The SUV veered away from the exit ramp, through a grassy divide and back onto I-380 where it collided with the motorcycle, also southbound on I-380. The motorcycle driver was thrown from the motorcycle and died from injuries sustained in the collision between the vehicle and restraining cables dividing the north and south lanes of I-380. Garcia was uninjured in the collision.
Garcia has been charged with vehicular homicide and OWI. The identity of the motorcycle driver is being withheld pending notification of family.
Traffic on I-380 southbound was closed for several hours while emergency crews investigated and removed the wreckage.
Further information will be released when available.
