The Iowa City Community School District plans to use federal monies to upgrade the air circulation at its health offices.
The Press-Citizen reports that the project has a budget of $1 million and will be implemented in all 28 of its school buildings.
Jeff Barnes, Iowa City Schools director of facilities, tells the newspaper that the upgrade to each school’s health offices will increase the amount of hourly “air exchanges” to help ward off potential exposure to illnesses. Most schools currently have an air exchange rate of five per hour; the upgrade will boost that to ten.
The majority of the construction will occur over the summer, starting in early June.
The project uses a small portion of the over $41.5 million in federal funding the District received for COVID-19 projects. Over a third is being used to fund staff positions and summer programming to help curb learning loss.
