An Iowa City man is facing several charges after an alleged domestic incident with his live-in partner of nearly two years.

Officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at approximately 7:20 pm Tuesday on the 2400 block of Muscatine Avenue. Dispatch informed police traveling to the location that they could hear a female yelling to get off of her. Upon arrival, officers located the apartment where the fight was allegedly taking place. They knocked on the door, but the man, identified as 30-year-old Kelvin Ware, refused to open the door for them.

Ware then reportedly climbed out a window and ran away, but officers caught him nearby. Police say they had to use OC spray on Ware to get him to comply with them. During a search subsequent to arrest, a small amount of marijuana and a scale with marijuana residue was reportedly found on the man.

The woman he lives with told officers that Ware confronted her throughout their apartment and would not let her leave. Witnesses to the incident said that Ware pulled the woman down from a window she was trying to escape through, and put her on the bed with his full body weight on top of her. They also alleged that Ware spat on the woman and threw a lit cigarette on her.

The woman tried calling 911, but Ware allegedly took her phone. That phone was found on his person during the search subsequent to arrest.

The criminal complaint indicates that the couple have been in a relationship for  5 years, have two children together, and have been living together for nearly two years.

Ware faces a number of charges. They include Domestic Abuse Assault, 3rd or subsequent offense; interference with official acts; false imprisonment; obstruction of emergency communications; and marijuana possession third or subsequent offense. If convicted on all counts, Ware could be sentenced to up to over 8 years in prison.
