Area transient charged after downtown liquor theft

An area transient has been arrested on a warrant stemming from a string of liquor thefts from a downtown Iowa City store.

Police say 38-year-old Andre Horton was witnessed on video stealing bottles of alcohol from Target on East Washington Street on four separate occasions. He was allegedly seen stealing a bottle just before noon on April 9th, and also stole four bottles on three separate occasions on April 19th. According to the criminal complaint, Horton stole over $220 in alcohol from the location, and has at least two prior theft convictions.

A warrant was issued on April 21st for Horton’s arrest. He was charged with his second trespass offense and 3rd degree theft. Horton could be sentenced to up to two years in jail if convicted.

A check of court records showed Horton charged with violation of a no-contact order and a third or subsequent Domestic Abuse Assault offense. He was sentenced on March 18th to time served for the no-contact order violation and given a 90 day jail sentence on the assault, 80 of which was suspended. He was also fined and ordered to serve two years of probation.
