An Iowa City man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly hitting his sleeping girlfriend.

The woman was at 33-year-old Andrew Tant’s Gilbert Street apartment for the night. She was asleep, and reportedly awoke to Tant striking her repeatedly. Once the woman was awake, Tant allegedly continued to strike her, causing her to feel dazed.

Tant allegedly admitted there was an altercation, but claimed it was only limited to shoving. His girlfriend complained of pain to her left arm.

The couple had lived together over a two-month period last year and were currently in an intimate relationship.

Tant was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.

A no-contact order was requested by the man’s girlfriend.
