A Coralville man who was allegedly hitting vehicles while behind the wheel was arrested Sunday night on a multitude of charges.
Police say the incident occurred on the 2400 block of Petsel Place in Iowa City around 8:30 pm. 43-year-old Jeffery Brown of 1st Street had been called in for allegedly driving his vehicle into other vehicles. Officers made contact with him and he reportedly was visibly intoxicated while sitting in his running vehicle.
Brown reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, had the odor of ingested alcohol, and admitted to being intoxicated and smoking marijuana before driving.
Brown allegedly refused to get out of his vehicle, and an officer grabbed him in an attempt to pull him out. While doing so, Brown reportedly bit the officer’s finger.
Brown exhibited measurable impairment on field tests but refused further testing. A probable cause search of the vehicle allegedly turned up marijuana in the center console. Police got a blood warrant from a judge, with toxicology results pending. It was also reported that Brown urinated in his pants in the backseat of the squad car at the Johnson County Jail.
A check of Brown’s driving record showed three previous OWI convictions, most recently this past January in Johnson County. His driving status also came up revoked.
Brown has been charged with OWI 3rd or Subsequent, 2nd offense Marijuana Possession, Assault on a Peace Officer, Driving while Denied or Revoked, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he faces a prison term of up to over nine years.
