Mt. Pleasant man arrested for downtown IC assault

A Mount Pleasant man is behind bars after Iowa City Police say he punched another subject early Saturday morning, possibly breaking the person’s nose.

According to arrest records, 25-year-old Tanner Helmick punched another person twice in the face without justification near the corner of Dubuque and Washington Streets just before 12:45am. The victim reported their nose may have been broken.

Helmick allegedly admitted to the attack, admitted to being drunk, and showed signs of intoxication. His breath alcohol level was measured at .217%

A post-arrest search of Helmick’s person reportedly turned up several baggies of white powder that he allegedly admitted were cocaine.

Helmick is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Public Intoxication and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.

Helmick was fined $65 on a Disorderly Conduct charge after his part in a fight at the Riverside Drive Kum & Go in 2019.
