Family farmer Heather Hora of Washington has announced her intention to run as a Republican in the House District 92 primary.
The district covers all of Washington and portions of southern and western Johnson County, including Hills and Lone Tree.
The Press Citizen reports that Hora and her husband own HK Farms and live at the fifth-generation family farm. A native of Iowa City, Hora grew up in Minneapolis and moved back to Iowa to attend the Highland Community School District.
Hora told the newspaper she’s running to help revitalize rural Iowa and to continue to make the state an attractive and safe place to live and start families. She added that it’s important to have more farmers in the legislature to help urban legislators understand issues affecting rural Iowans.
Hora will face Washington mayor Jaron Rosien in the June primary, as they vie to take the seat coming vacant after Representative Jarad Klein announced his retirement. The winner will likely face Democrat Ty Bopp, who is running unopposed, in November’s general election.
