Recent polling conducted for Democrat Abby Finkenauer shows her far ahead of her competitors in the primary race for the US Senate.
The Gazette reports that the poll of 600 likely Democratic primary voters showed the former US House member with 64 percent, followed by retired admiral Mike Franken at 15 percent and physician Glenn Hurst with 6 percent. In the Cedar Rapids market, her lead is 75 to 16 percent.
Finkenauer’s campaign manager, Amanda Sands says the commanding lead shows that Finkenauer is the right candidate to challenge Chuck Grassley’s decades-long stranglehold on the Senate seat.
Finkenauer is waiting on a Polk County District Court ruling that challenges her nomination petitions and could keep her off the primary ballot. Regardless of the ruling, it’s expected that the case will make it to the state Supreme Court.
Finkenauer has the endorsement of AFSCME Council 61, the largest public employee union in the state. Franken has been endorsed by retired Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, while Hurst has the endorsement of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.
In other polling, the race is much closer for the 1st Congressional district race between Democrat Christina Bohannan and Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks. Miller-Meeks leads Bohannan 43 to 42 percent with 15 percent undecided. The poll, conducted by the 314 Action Fund, showed 60 percent of likely voters favoring abortion rights and preserving the Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade ruling.
