A University of Iowa fraternity has been suspended for alleged hazing incidents.

The suspension was handed down by the Sigma Chi International Fraternity executive committee for what was deemed “an indefinite period”.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the UI chapter of Sigma Chi received notice of the suspension on March 1st. The letter cites the chapter’s “disregard for risk management policies put in place by the university and international fraternity”. No other details were included.

The UI chapter has been cited for violations every year since a Sigma Chi freshman died of alcohol poisoning during an out of town event in April 2017. The violations have included illegal tailgate parties, holding prohibited events at the house on North Dubuque Street, and non-compliance with the university’s arrest policy.

Sigma Chi becomes the eighth UI fraternity currently on suspension by either the national chapter or the school itself.
