A University of Iowa student was taken into custody early Sunday after an incident in downtown Iowa City that started with officers seeing him running with a chair.

Police say they saw 19-year-old Connor Chew of Rienow Hall just before 1:15 am running with a chair that he had reportedly taken from outside a business on Washington Street near Clinton Street. He was stopped on the Pentacrest.

Officers say Chew had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of ingested alcohol. A PBT showed his blood-alcohol level at .162 percent, and a search of his person allegedly turned up a fictitious Ohio driver’s license with the correct birthdate, but the year showed him to be 22, not 19.

Chew was taken into custody and charged with Public Intoxication and Possession of a Fictitious ID. He could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail if convicted on both counts.
