The Iowa City Community School Board has voted unanimously to remove the district’s mask mandate.

The move comes amid new guidelines handed down by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Based on new COVID-19 cases, hospital beds being used, and hospital admissions, the CDC has downgraded Johnson County from “High” to “Medium” on its COVID-19 Community Level ratings.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, 71.7% of Johnson County’s population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 can return to school five days later as long as they wear a mask for the recommended isolation period.

District officials stress mask requirements could be revisited if Johnson County returns to a “High” Community Level rating.
