The University of Iowa will ask the state Board of Regents to approve a new center focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Daily Iowan reports that the Hawkeye Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center in the Carver College of Medicine would be tailored to an underserved rural population. It already has a $6.2 million Patient Safety Organization Center grant through the National Institutes of Health.

The proposed Center will have four components. The Hawk-IDDRC Research Project will focus on risks in young children with developmental disabilities. The dissemination component will work to effectively communicate research to the scientific community and the public. An educational component will feature monthly seminars and involve scientists, trainees, the public, and intellectually disabled families. Finally, the fourth component encompasses four research cores the center plans to implement.

The DI says the date of implementation of the center will be determined upon approval by the Regents on Wednesday.
