A locally-owned donut shop that has been in business for over a decade has announced that it will cease business this Sunday, while a familiar franchise plans to open in its place.
In a social media post from Daylight Donuts, the Ward family thanked their loyal customers, calling it a privilege to share in their daily lives and special occasions. The family also thanked its current and former employees for their sacrifices of early mornings and late nights.
The site, on First Avenue between the MiniMall and the old Pla-mor Lanes location, will reopen March 1st as the franchise shop Donutland. They have also announced plans to reopen a second Cedar Rapids location on Williams Boulevard SW. That location closed up shop 17 years ago.
The last Iowa City Donutland was located next to Delimart on Highway 1 West. That store closed in the early 2010’s, and the location has hosted a number of unsuccessful restaurants since then. Donutland’s Coralville Strip location closed in 2004.
Daylight Donuts is also a franchisee, with the Day family opening their first shop in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1954.
