A Coralville man was taken into custody a day after allegedly assaulting his live-in girlfriend.
According to the criminal complaints, police responded to a domestic call on Holiday Road just after 1am Monday on a neighbor’s report of a woman yelling for help and for someone to call 911. Upon arrival, the woman was the only party at the apartment. She told authorities that she called 911 from 36-year-old Setra Sumerall’s phone, which led to him assaulting her.
He allegedly grabbed her wrists and tried to take the phone away from her, then put his hands on her mouth. Officers on scene noted that the woman had bruises all over her body and bleeding from her lips. She reportedly complained of pain.
The woman and Sumerall have been in a relationship for approximately a year and a half, and have been living together for the last six month. Police were unable to locate Sumerall initially, but picked him up on a warrant Tuesday morning. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on both counts, he faces up to 13 months in jail.
Judge Deborah Minot issued a no-contact order between Sumerall and the woman. Future court dates have yet to be set.
