Iowans placed more than $300 million in sports bets in January, a new record.

The Gazette reports that of the over $303 million bet, $276 million was wagered online. That translates to profits of $14 million for casinos and sports betting companies.

Analysts say the numbers were boosted by the extra week of NFL games, strong interest in University of Iowa and Iowa State men’s basketball, and the success of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

Betting is expected to continue to be strong in February and March, with Super Bowl bets and the NCAA basketball tournaments causing a flurry of action.
