A central Iowa man faces charges that he threatened to kill workers at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and blow up the facility.

32-year-old Tyler Summers of West Des Moines was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 10:45 Tuesday morning. UI Police say Summers was being seen at the UIHC Sunday night when he threatened to shoot a staff member in the head with a .45 caliber handgun. He also allegedly tried to learn the staffer’s first and last name, and where they lived. Police say at one point, Summers threatened to blow up the hospital.

During an ensuing struggle, Summers allegedly kicked a staff member twice in the groin, spit on others, and fashioned two different items into penetrating weapons and tried to stab staffers with them. Summers was finally restrained, but in the process he allegedly destroyed a hospital bed valued at $4,800.

Summers is charged with Assault on Peace Officers and Others, Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief, and two counts of 1st Degree Harassment.

If convicted on all charges, Summers faces a maximum of 12 years in prison. He was also wanted out of Lee County for violating his probation on a previous weapons charge.
