Steindler Orthopedic Clinic has announced a partnership with Mercy Iowa City, and plan to develop a medical park on a large parcel of land in North Liberty.

The Gazette reports that the announcement comes days before the State Health Facilities Council was supposed to consider a Steindler surgeon’s proposal to build a $19.2 million ambulatory surgery center on the North Liberty site — although consideration of that has been delayed because one of the council members can’t make the meeting.

Steindler Orthopedic Clinic President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Magallanes told The Gazette that Mercy Iowa City had approached him with a vision for the 36-acre medical park development that would keep the two entities financially independent.

Mercy’s Iowa City campus is outgrowing its space, with aging infrastructure and technology. Acting President and CEO Mike Trachta said the relationship is long-standing and hopes to strengthen the partnership with the Orthopedic Clinic.
