A Coralville man who police say threatened another man with a knife at the Iowa City rec center has been given a suspended sentence.

Iowa City Police say on the afternoon of March 15th, 2021 55-year-old Thomas Preyear of 5th Street approached another man inside the gym at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and threatened him at knifepoint. Preyear was allegedly upset about rumors he believed the other man had been spreading about him. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s account, and security video shows Preyear waving a knife around in an aggressive manner. The knife was later recovered from Preyear’s person.

Records show on Wednesday Preyear pleaded guilty to a charge of Assault While Displaying a Weapon. A Carrying Weapons charge was dropped in a deal with prosecutors.

Preyear was given a suspended 120-day sentence and two years of probation. A no-contact order between Preyear and his victim was extended to five years.
