An Iowa City man who broke parole stipulations in December after allegedly attempting to break into apartments is in trouble again after an alleged assault this week.
21-year-old Deon Brand of Brookwood Drive was at his residence Tuesday morning when he got into an argument with the alleged victim over what goes in the freezer. During the argument, Brand is accused of closing the freezer door on the victim’s arm with such force that the shelves of the freezer broke off.
The victim reported pain and a small cut on their arm. Brand allegedly admitted to the assault.
Brand was awaiting trial on attempted burglary charges after officers were called to the 900 block of South Dubuque Street on December 17th on reports of a burglary. Brand was apprehended by witnesses after he got involved in a fight nearby on the 700 block of South Gilbert. Witnesses told police that they saw Brand trying to open other apartment doors in the building, while one said that they had Brand on surveillance video committing the alleged crime. He was charged with 2nd degree burglary.
Brand was awaiting a case management conference on February 25th and trial on April 19th when Tuesday’s assault occurred. The alleged burglary was a parole violation, as he was given a two year suspended sentence and two years probation on a weapons charge from December 2020. He now faces over 7 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
