An Iowa City man’s relationship with his girlfriend may be strained after she called police on him for taking her vehicle.

Police were called to the Triple Crown Lane apartment of 31-year-old Shango Johnson several times early Sunday because he was allegedly intoxicated and causing a problem with his girlfriend. She reported that Johnson took her vehicle without her permission.

Johnson returned to the residence just before 5 am and was located just outside his apartment. The woman’s vehicle was located and had indications of recent operation. Upon contact,  he reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, impaired balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. The arrest report described Johnson as belligerent, rude, profane, emotional and confrontational. He was arrested, and the keys to his girlfriend’s vehicle were found in his pocket. Johnson refused all sobriety testing.

A check of the man’s driving record showed his status as suspended since this past May for non-payment of fines. During post arrest processing, Johnson allegedly threatened to inflict bodily harm on the officer and told him that he would not make it home alive at the end of his shift.

Johnson now faces several charges, including Operating a Vehicle without Consent, first offense OWI, Public Intoxication, Driving while Suspended, and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
