An Iowa City woman has been arrested on a warrant stemming from a December incident when she allegedly sprayed mace in the face of her husband while he was at work.

Police say the incident occurred at the Casey’s on North Dubuque Street the evening of December 23rd. Police were called by the husband, who report that his wife, 27-year-old Chantel Simmons of Haywood Drive, was harassing him. While en route, the officer was told that Simmons had mace in her possession.

Upon arrival, the man reportedly had been sprayed in the face with a chemical irritant, and identified Simmons as his attacker. Other witnesses and workers at the convenience store stated that they saw Simmons engage in a verbal argument with the man, then reach across the counter into the employee-only area and spray him in the face.

The man had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. He told police that he and Simmons share a child together and said that she was his wife.

A warrant was issued for Simmons’ arrest on December 27th. She was taken into custody Sunday night and charged with 1st degree Burglary and Domestic Assault causing Injury. If convicted on both counts, Simmons could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.

Judge Jason Burns issued a no-contact order Monday and released Simmons on her own recognizance ahead of future court dates.
