Allegedly pointing a gun at a man’s head and pulling the trigger has led to the arrest of an Iowa City resident.
Iowa City Police say the alleged victim went to a residence on Westwinds Drive the night of November 7th to confront a reportedly suicidal individual, identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Hulen. The alleged victim reportedly knew Hulen had a gun at his residence and was planning to shoot himself.
Police say Hulen pointed a Glock 19 9mm at the other man’s head, said he was going to kill him, then pulled the trigger. The gun was not loaded, unbeknownst to the alleged victim. The man reported hearing the metallic click, feeling the gun against his head and fearing for his life.
Hulen later reportedly told police he was blackout drunk during the incident. He allegedly said he remembered giving his ammunition to the other man, but not getting into an altercation with him. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 2:45 Wednesday afternoon and charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and 1st Degree Harassment. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of four years in prison.
