Sentencing has been set for a local transient accused of robbing and trying to kill an Iowa City convenience store employee.

34-year-old Trell Grant entered a guilty plea on Friday in Johnson County court. Details of his plea deal have not been released.

Grant was initially charged with Attempted Murder and 1st Degree Robbery for the August 21st, 2020 incident at Delimart on Lower Muscatine Road. Iowa City Police say Grant entered the store, walked behind the counter, then quickly and repeatedly stabbed the clerk with a knife until the clerk opened the cash register drawer. Grant then fled the scene with money from the register.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of multiple stab wounds and required immediate surgery.

Grant was taken into custody later that day at the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street after police found his bag at the scene of the attack.

If convicted on both original charges, Grant would have faced a maximum of 50 years in prison.

On Friday, Judge Kevin McKeever set a sentencing hearing for April 18th.
